The functions of RNA were once thought to be confined to protein synthesis. Research, however, continues to enrich our understanding of this important class of molecules. We now know that some RNAs help regulate gene expression while others function as catalysts. Some evidence suggests that RNA played a major role in the origin of life on Earth.

This module provides background materials for faculty and a set of four education activities for students.

Student Lessons

  1. RNA Structure: Tapes to Shapes
  2. RNA Catalysis
  3. RNA and  Evolution
