Dr. Janet Carlson is the Executive Director of BSCS. She oversees the three lines of research that define the work at BSCS. These lines include the nature of curriculum, teacher learning and practice, and leadership and policy. She is also responsible for finding new opportunities for BSCS to partner with other organizations that are interested in improving the teaching and learning of science for all.

Dr. Carlson's range of experience includes teaching middle school and high school life and Earth science, teaching science methods for preservice and master teachers, developing university-school partnerships to improve science teaching and learning, developing innovative science curriculum materials, leading professional development activities in science education, and conducting school-based research. Her current line of research focuses on studying the effectiveness of research-based science curriculum materials when implemented with varying degrees of professional development.

Dr. Carlson earned a B.A. in Environmental Biology from Carleton College, a M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction from Kansas State University, and a Ph.D. in Instruction and Curriculum in the content area of Science Education from the University of Colorado.
