Research on BSCS National Academy for Curriculum Leadership (NACL)

The BSCS National Academy for Curriculum Leadership (NACL) is a three-year professional development program designed to assist schools and districts in building the capacity to improve their secondary school science education program. The NACL is based on the core belief that when reform-oriented instructional materials are implemented in conjunction with an ongoing professional development program created to transform teachers' thinking and promote collaboration, the combination can contribute to building both a professional learning community in schools and improving student achievement.

The research reports listed on this page represent internal and external studies.

This report describes a three-year BSCS research study of the NACL as it was applied in the state of Washington (as part of the WA-LASER Project). The study examines, over time, teachers’ understandings, beliefs, and practices related to curriculum reform. The study was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through a supplemental grant to the original NSF award given to the SCI Center (2001-2005).

This report, generated by Inverness Research Associates, examines the approach of the BSCS NACL to improving secondary science education, and illuminates some of the lessons learned from BSCS’s five years of work with districts across the nation. Inverness Research Associates first describes its methodology and then the program, including assumptions that underlie its approach and its strategy. The report includes two primary sections, “Contributions of the NACL” and “Broader Lessons Learned: the BSCS Approach to Secondary Science Program Improvement.”
